All good animal trainers use shaping, but often in horse training it’s not emphasized enough. Shaping is about breaking down a task into smaller parts that the horse can be rewarded for in order to train the behavior.
Say we are trying to teach the horse to leg yield, it’s very confusing for the horse if we try to do a proper leg yield from the start. Instead, we should train it first from the ground, then from a halt, then from the walk, and not worry about the details, like where the head and the neck are.
In the video, Jody also talks about a modified scale of training, starting with a basic attempt, moving on to obedience, then into rhythm, straightness, contact and lastly proof - anywhere, any time. This is a way of breaking down behaviors to make the correct response as obvious and easy as possible for the horse.
