Gait Markers of Pain
The gait markers include:
- A rushed gate (more than 40 trot steps per 15 seconds), irregular rhythm in trot or canter, repeated changes of speed in trot or canter
- Gait is too slow (less than 35 trot steps per 15 seconds), passage like trot
- Spontaneous change of gaits, for example breaks from canter to trot
- The horse moving on 3 tracks in trot or canter, where the hind limbs don’t follow the forelimbs
- Bilateral hind limb toe drag, or stumbling repeatedly in front or behind
- Sudden change of direction against rider’s cues, spooking
- Incorrect strike off in canter, or cross-cantering
- Reluctance to move forward or stops spontaneously
- Bucking or kicking backwards
- Rearing
